Conditions for Living is a fine arts documentary that focuses on the temporary enclaves of displaced migrants in Northern France and their attempts to cross into the UK.
The work was produced from several visits to the site over a period of 6 months. My experience of that place during that time was one that was in the moment of the in-between, which became the integral theme of the project.
These enclaves exist but only momentarily for the migrants who pass through and stay for as long as needed. Lacking identity documents, the migrants appear like shadows, with no trace of their entry or exit into the country. They arrive on the edges of town overnight, attempting to assimilate themselves into their new yet strange environment. There is the tedium that occurs while being in-transit but also the anticipation and hope of what they perceive will be home.
